Customs Regulations

Shipments containing USED household goods and personal effects are subject to import taxes and duties except for:

1- Accredited diplomats or members of international organizations.

2- Employees of an organization, under contract with the Costa Rican government, authorized temporary or definitive importation of his/her household goods.

3-Costa Rican citizens who have lived minimum 24 months abroad. Shipper must pay tax over CIF value of shipment.(Ad valorem is the only tax exempted)

Motor Vehicles:

Heavy taxes and duties apply, EXCEPT for shippers described in 1), 2), above. Amount to be paid will depend on value, year, make, model, cubic centimeters and extras of imported vehicles.

List of Prohibited Articles:

Importation: Narcotics, explosives, pornographic or subversive literature.

There are restrictions for the importation of firearms, ammunition, certain animal and agricultural products, plants, medicines, large quantities of liquor and food.

Exportation: Original pre-Columbian and other archaeological pieces.

Documents Required for Incoming Shipments

For Household and Personal Effects:

• Original Bill of Landing or Air Waybill (indicating total number of items and weight).
• Complete, itemized inventory or packing list (Spanish or English), indicating value declared for customs.
• Passport

For Motor Vehicles:

• Original purchase invoice.
• Original registration card or property title.
• Pollution certification consulated

For Domestic Pets (Cats and Dogs):

• Health certificate.
• Anti rabic vaccination.
• Air Waybill.
• Invoice indicating value of animal.
